Curi-Cancha Reserve, Monteverde

Map of Curi-Cancha Reserve, Monteverde, Costa Rica

A private farm on the edge of Monteverde, and the guided birding morning on two of our trips.

The walk starts in the lower part of the farm, in pre-montane humid forest that borders the Monteverde reserve, and climbs on natural paths from the pasture edge through secondary forest into primary. Several habitats on one trail is the point: our trip pages name five birds from that one morning, the Three-wattled Bellbird, the Resplendent Quetzal, Lesson’s Motmot, Collared Trogon and Keel-billed Toucan.

Of our three Monteverde pages, this is the one with a farm in it. The two reserves are protected cloud forest from the first step; Curi-Cancha starts at the pasture.

Getting there

Our trips bird it from the Trapp Family Lodge, a few kilometres away. The trail climbs, so wear boots you have already walked in.

Where we stay nearby

Three of our lodges: the Trapp Family Lodge, the closest hotel to the Monteverde reserve that Curi-Cancha borders; Monteverde Lodge & Gardens, which sends its guests here and to the two big reserves; and Senda Monteverde, 1.7 kilometres from Curi-Cancha in a straight line, with naturalist guides on its own staff.

★★★

The closest hotel to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, with trails from the property that lead straight into it, so the reserve is a walk and not a drive. Six of our 45 recent birding itineraries sleep here, level with Arenal Observatory for the most.
