Scaled Pigeon
Patagioenas speciosa
In Spanish: Paloma Escamosa (Paloma Morada)
- Resident
A wary canopy pigeon with a scaly neck and a red, white-tipped bill.
The Scaled Pigeon (Paloma Escamosa, also called Paloma Morada) is a chunky canopy pigeon named for the scale-like pattern on its neck and breast feathers. The official Costa Rican bird list gives it as a resident.
It is a bird of treetops and it is wary, so most views are brief and distant. A bright red bill with a white tip is the feature to look for.
On a trip we build in the south, it is one of the pigeons worth scanning for once the route drops into the lowlands around Ciudad Neily and Esquinas, where guides on a January 2024 tour found it fairly common.
How to find it
Plan for early morning and late afternoon, which are the times suggested for this wary canopy bird. Scan the sky as well as the treetops, and listen for the deep coos that can give away a bird you cannot yet see. Fruiting trees are worth watching, since one bird was seen perched and then feeding in such a tree. In the south, the lowlands around Ciudad Neily and Esquinas are where guides found it fairly common. Expect brief views and be patient.
How to recognise it
Start with the bill: adults have a bright red bill with a white tip, the quickest mark to look for.
The crown and upperparts are reddish-brown to purplish-chestnut. The neck, breast and upper back are buff to whitish. The scale-like pattern on the neck and breast feathers gives the bird its name.
Adults measure roughly 28 to 34 cm long, which makes this a sizeable pigeon. Females are duller than males, with plain brown plumage, and the scaly neck pattern lacks the metallic shine seen in males.
These size and plumage details describe the species across its whole range, not only birds in Costa Rica.
What it sounds like
Behaviour and diet
It eats mostly forest fruits and seeds. It is usually seen alone, in pairs or in small groups of three.
Birds are usually seen perched high in tree canopies. Their wary nature means they are rarely seen well, so expect distant views. Across the range the species is wary mainly because people often hunt it.
In flight it is high, fast and direct, with steady wingbeats broken by an occasional sharp wing flick. On a January 2023 tour in the deep south, one bird perched and then fed in a fruiting tree.
Where it lives
Across its range this pigeon lives in the forest canopy, at forest edges, in gallery forest and in wooded farmland.
In Costa Rica it has been recorded in the southern Pacific lowlands, including Palmar Sur and the area around Ciudad Neily and Esquinas. It has also been found in the middle elevations of the humid Pacific slope, and in the Caribbean lowlands, where treetops near an ecolodge at Laguna del Lagarto are a place birders may spot it. Cloudbridge Nature Reserve lists it on its bird checklist.
Similar birds
Costa Rica has several other Patagioenas pigeons, many with the local name Paloma Morada, including pale-vented, red-billed, ruddy and short-billed. The Scaled Pigeon is told apart by its scaly neck and red bill with a white tip. Pale-vented Pigeon (Paloma Colorada) is also called Paloma Morada, and a tour record from Palmar Sur shows the two seen together.
Names and lore in Costa Rica
Costa Ricans list this bird as morada, paloma morada and paloma escamosa, and use morada for several Patagioenas pigeons. Spanish-language accounts of the species more widely also give paloma escamada, paloma trocal and paloma guacoa.
Status and conservation
The official Costa Rican bird list (2025-2026) gives the Scaled Pigeon as a resident (R), and the IUCN lists the species as Least Concern.
Photography tips
Expect distant views, since the bird is usually perched high in the canopy and rarely seen well. Early morning and late afternoon are the suggested times. Watch fruiting trees, and scan the sky for the fast, direct flight.
