Uniform Crake
Amaurolimnas concolor
In Spanish: Rascón Café
- Resident
A plain, secretive crake of wet forest, heard far more often than seen.
The Uniform Crake, listed in Costa Rica as Rascón Café, is a small, plain crake that lives under cover in wet forest. Costa Rica's official list shows it as a resident.
Near Arenal it has a name among birders. A writer who visited Roca Dura Reserve, just outside La Fortuna, called it possibly the easiest, most reliable place in the world to see this crake. On a trip we build around Arenal, it is a bird we can plan quiet time for.
Expect patience rather than a quick tick. The species is very rarely seen, which is why a clear view counts as a prize.
How to find it
Listen first for the rising whistles, then move slowly and quietly. Near La Fortuna, a guide walked softly through the low plants to push a crake toward the group. The birders heard at least four and saw one well during two mid-morning hours. Wet, shaded understory beside a stream or swamp is the place to focus. Feeders at the back of a wet area have also produced a sighting. Plan on several chances rather than one, since on a 2023 tour the crakes gave a few opportunities but were very hard to spot.
How to recognise it
This is a small crake, about 20 to 23 cm long and roughly 95 to 130 g.
Look for these marks together:
- Olive-brown upperparts.
- Rufous underparts, palest on the throat.
- A greenish-yellow bill.
- Red or orange legs.
- A red iris.
The plain colour with that red eye helps set it apart from other crakes. There is no bold pattern to learn, so the three bright accents of bill, legs and eye against the even brown body are the best clue. In good light it should not be mistaken for other crakes.

Behaviour and diet
The Uniform Crake feeds mostly under cover. It searches leaf litter and debris and digs in mud with its bill. Its diet includes insects, spiders, frogs, lizards, berries and seeds.
It is secretive and probably overlooked. Even so, one group near Arenal watched a crake walk out of the shadows into the open. They called it a surprise, since the species is so rarely seen. Another was seen at the feeders, at the back of the wet area.
Where it lives
Across its range it lives in forested swamps, streamside thickets, old wet second growth and damp ravines. The species ranges from sea level to about 1,000 m.
In Costa Rica, records come from the Arenal and La Fortuna area, from Quebrada Ganado in Puntarenas at about 600 m, and from Rio Tigres. One injured bird was found beside the road between Monteverde and Cerro Plano at 1350 m in May 2010, reported as the first Monteverde record.
When to see it
The breeding season is largely unknown, but in Costa Rica it includes July. A local guide told one writer that more than one crake can sometimes be seen right at the path edge during certain times of year.
Similar birds
It looks most like Russet-crowned Crake and Chestnut-headed Crake, though its range overlaps meaningfully only with the Russet-crowned. Its brown colour can also be confused with Black-banded Crake. In good light it should not be mistaken for other crakes.
Names and lore in Costa Rica
Costa Rica's official name is Rascón Café. Other Spanish names for the species elsewhere include Cotara Café, Polluela Café and Gallineta.
Status and conservation
The official list of Costa Rican birds shows it as a resident, and the IUCN rates it Least Concern, though it is local, fairly common in some places and rare or absent in others.
Photography tips
Go slowly and let the bird come to you. A guide moving quietly through the low plants can push a crake toward the group, and the feeders at the back of the wet area near Arenal have offered a view.
