Buff-fronted Foliage-gleaner
Dendroma rufa
In Spanish: Trepamusgo Rojizo
- Resident
A rufous-winged highland gleaner that hides inside mixed flocks.
The Buff-fronted Foliage-gleaner (Trepamusgo Rojizo, Dendroma rufa) is a resident of Costa Rica's highlands, where it occurs in a patchy way as the subspecies panerythra. It is a fairly large foliage-gleaner, about 18 to 19 cm long, with a buff-orange forehead that runs into a broad eyebrow stripe.
It is called uncommon to rare across most of its range, and it may seem scarce partly because it is hard to see in the treetops. Birders mostly meet it inside mixed-species flocks of insect-eating birds, so on a trip we build the plan is to stay with a passing flock rather than hunt for a lone bird.
How to find it
Stay with mixed-species flocks of insect-eating birds as they pass, because that is where birders mostly meet it. Scan the subcanopy and canopy first, then the semi-open parts of the forest. Check horizontal branches and leafy branch tips. Be ready for a brief view: in Tapantí National Park one sat half hidden in a tangle of vines, then flew across the road and vanished. Playback is no sure thing either, since on that tour recordings of several foliage-gleaners, including this one, drew no response.
How to recognise it
Look for a fairly large foliage-gleaner, about 18 to 19 cm long.
The forehead is buff-orange and continues into a broad eyebrow stripe. The wings are bright rufous. The tail is duller rufous brown, and the tail feathers are pointed. Males and females look alike.
The Costa Rica and Panama form has a paler, grayer crown and back than the Venezuelan forms, and its underparts are a deeper, more even buff-orange. A mostly grayish back contrasts strongly with the reddish-brown wings and tail. Not every population shows a clear buff forehead patch, so check that contrast too. Together, the buff-orange brow, rufous wings and pointed tail feathers help separate it from other foliage-gleaners.

Behaviour and diet
It usually forages alone or in pairs, often with mixed-species feeding flocks. It works mainly in the subcanopy and canopy, but sometimes lower down. It often stays in the semi-open parts of the forest, hopping and searching along horizontal branches, sometimes out at the leafy branch tips.
It picks its prey mostly from live leaves, and also from dead leaves, bark, moss and debris. It sometimes hangs nearly upside down to reach the underside of leaves.
Where it lives
In Central America it lives in humid foothill and montane forest, at roughly 800 to 2,500 m elevation. In Costa Rica it occurs in a patchy way in the highlands, as the subspecies panerythra, a form that also occurs in western Panama and in the Colombian Andes. A wildlife list from Casa Mariposa gives it as an uncommon resident, and a birding blog calls it a rare resident of mossy cloud forest.
Similar birds
Other foliage-gleaners can look alike at a glance. The buff-orange forehead and eyebrow, rufous wings and pointed tail feathers are the marks to check. Outside the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, the grayish back against reddish-brown wings and tail should make it easy to identify.
Names and lore in Costa Rica
In Costa Rica the Spanish name is Trepamusgo Rojizo. Other countries use different names: hojarasquero ocráceo in Colombia, limpiafronda frentianteada in Ecuador and Panama, and ticotico grande in Argentina.
Status and conservation
The Costa Rican bird list gives it as a resident, not a migrant, and worldwide it is Least Concern.
Photography tips
It often stays in the semi-open parts of the forest and hops along horizontal branches, sometimes out at the leafy branch tips. Watch those perches while a mixed flock passes, and expect only a short window.
