Family Troglodytidae
Ochraceous Wren
Troglodytes ochraceus
In Spanish: Soterré Ocroso
- Resident
- Regional endemic
A tiny, bright highland wren that works through the moss on trunks and branches.
The Ochraceous Wren is a very small wren, brighter than most of its relatives, with an orange-brown forehead and a buffy-orange eyebrow stripe. In Costa Rica it lives in the highlands, from the Tilarán Mountains to the Talamanca ranges.
It is found only in Costa Rica and Panama, and the Costa Rican list marks it as a regional endemic resident. Look for it creeping over mossy trunks, and listen for its song first.
How to find it
Listen for the tinkling song first, then scan the lower forest layers near tree trunks and dense growth. Look for it climbing vertical trunks and big limbs, and check mixed flocks in the middle levels of the forest. After the breeding season, family groups of three to four birds stay together for several months, so one sighting may lead to several birds moving through the moss.
How to recognise it
This is a very small wren, about 9.5 to 10 cm long and roughly 8 to 10 g. It is brighter than most of its relatives. The upperparts are brown, the forehead is orange-brown, and the underparts are buffy-brown, darkening toward the rear. A bold yellowish-buff eyebrow stripe runs back to the nape, set against a darker patch behind the eye. The tail is brown with blackish bars. Costa Rica has 17 wren species, so the eyebrow stripe, the overall colour and the elevation all help you narrow it down.
What it sounds like
Behaviour and diet
It mostly forages on mossy trunks and branches, and the species is generally fairly easy to watch. It climbs up or down vertical trunks and along big limbs, searching moss, root cushions and vine tangles for insects and spiders. It sometimes joins mixed flocks in the middle levels of the forest. Pairs stay together all year. In Costa Rica, three nests were found in a mass of epiphytes and debris on a hanging branch about 12 to 15 m above the ground.
Where it lives
It breeds in mountains from about 900 m to 2500 m, sometimes up to 3000 m. It uses humid forest, forest edges, tall secondary forest and semi-open grassy areas, and favours mature, humid montane and cloud forest rich in mosses and epiphytes such as bromeliads. In Costa Rica the nominate form lives in the highlands from the Tilarán Mountains to the Talamanca ranges, and in the mountainous areas between them.
When to see it
Nesting seems to run from April to July in Costa Rica.
Similar birds
It looks like the House Wren, which is also common in Costa Rica. The Ochraceous Wren is brighter, especially on the face, and has a broad yellow-buff eyebrow stripe.
Names and lore in Costa Rica
The AOCR list gives Soterré Ocroso, and Costa Rican sources also call it Soterrey Ocroso. Other Spanish names include Chochín Ocráceo, and Panamanians call it Sotorrey Ocráceo. The House Wren is the one known in Costa Rica as Soterré. A name in Cabécar, an Indigenous language of Costa Rica, is Kokorotë.
Status and conservation
The AOCR list marks it as a regional endemic resident, and the IUCN rates it Least Concern.
Photography tips
Photographers have caught it picking through moss, its usual setting. Expect to shoot low, mossy trunks and branches rather than open perches.
