Family Grallariidae
Scaled Antpitta
Grallaria guatimalensis
In Spanish: Tororoi Dorsiescamado (Hormiguero)
- Resident
A round, tailless ball on long legs, hopping over mountain forest floors.
The Scaled Antpitta (Tororoi Dorsiescamado) asks a beginner for patience. It is large, round and long-legged, with almost no tail, a stout bill and big dark eyes, and it keeps to the forest floor.
In Costa Rica it lives in wet montane forest on both slopes, and it is described here as rare. A Costa Rica birding blog calls it among the harder antpittas to see, and its overall population is thought to be shrinking.
On a trip we build, Tapantí National Park is a known place to look for it, a mid-elevation mossy forest park where it has been listed among the rarities.
How to find it
Choose a narrow, quiet forest trail, since antpittas in general are best surprised very early or very late in the day. Birders at Tapantí woke at 4:00 am to be on the trails before sunrise, when antpittas can sometimes be seen hopping along the path. The wider, well kept El Copal trails have leaf litter that gives good visibility. Walk slowly and watch the ground for feeding or hopping birds rather than scanning branches. Expect fleeting looks, which is all one group got at Tapantí.
How to recognise it
Picture a plump ball on sticks: large, round and long-legged, with almost no tail, a stout bill and big dark eyes.
It measures about 18 cm long.
The underparts are rufous, or pale cinnamon, with a pale whisker.
The crown and nape are grey.
The back is olive-brown, with black feather edges that make the scaled look behind its name.
It has pale lores and blue-grey skin around the eye.
The dark scaling is hard to see in the field, so lean on the round shape, the rufous underparts and the long-legged stance as your first clues.

Behaviour and diet
This is a mostly terrestrial bird. It hops over the ground and fallen logs, and only occasionally perches on understorey branches. It flips leaves aside with its bill and probes soft mud, finding worms, large insects, other invertebrates and small frogs. It is almost always on the forest floor and usually favours dense vegetation. When flushed it flies off with a whirr of wings, often the only hint that one was there at all.
Where it lives
In Costa Rica the Scaled Antpitta lives in wet montane forest. Its recorded elevation band here is narrow, roughly 800 to 1,600 m, while elsewhere in Central America it spans a wider range. The Costa Rican form occurs on both slopes of the country and extends into western Panama. Within that range it favours dense vegetation close to the ground.
Similar birds
The Ochre-breasted Antpitta is also found at Tapantí, so a round, long-legged bird on the trail there deserves a careful look at its underparts. Some authors think the Scaled Antpitta and the Chestnut-crowned Antpitta are so alike that they should be treated as one species.
Names and lore in Costa Rica
The Costa Rican Spanish name is Tororoi Dorsiescamado, and the AOCR list adds the alternate name Hormiguero. Other Spanish names for the species include tororoí cholino, and in Panama it is tororoí escamado.
Status and conservation
The AOCR list marks it as a resident (R); it is rated Least Concern globally, but in Costa Rica it is described as rare.
Photography tips
Across its whole range the species is rarely anything but a very hard bird to see, so treat any photograph as a bonus. Quiet trails at first light, with open leaf litter, give the best chance of a clear view.
