Tropical Parula

Setophaga pitiayumi

In Spanish: Parula Tropical

  • Resident

Tiny canopy warbler with a buzzy trill, found by ear first.

The Tropical Parula is a tiny warbler that lives on both slopes of Costa Rica. It is described as fairly common on the Caribbean side and fairly uncommon on the Pacific side.

It moves fast through the middle and upper canopy, so it is easier to hear than to photograph. Listen for the trill first, then scan the foliage above.

How to find it

Good places to look are the Caribbean foothills and montane forests, especially where trees are heavy with epiphytes. Birders locate it by its persistent singing, then scan the foliage above. Where a singing bird is heard, it may take 10 to 15 minutes of patient watching before it shows itself. Fruiting or active Cecropia trees are also worth checking.

How to recognise it

This is a tiny warbler, about 11 cm long. Males have blue-gray upperparts with a greenish patch on the back, two white wing bars, and yellow underparts that turn orange on the breast. Males also show a black patch from the bill to behind the eye. Females are a little duller and have no black on the head. These descriptions come from the species as a whole, so Costa Rican birds may look slightly different in detail.

Behaviour and diet

It feeds mostly on small insects. It forages from the middle levels up to the treetops, often along streams, and sometimes hovers or flies out to catch prey in the air. It is usually seen alone or in pairs, and it sometimes joins mixed-species flocks. It moves fast through the mid and upper canopy.

Where it lives

In Costa Rica it prefers the canopy and edges of tall wet highland forest. It also uses taller trees in nearby semi-open clearings and in second growth, and it turns up at forest edges, coffee plantations and gardens where epiphytes are plentiful. It is usually found below about 1,800 m. One source gives 600 to 1,850 m on the Caribbean slope, and above 900 m on the Pacific side.

When to see it

The species does not migrate in Costa Rica and holds territories all year. One source says it is easier to see in the dry season, December to April, and that birds flit through the canopy especially in the early morning.

Similar birds

Most Tropical Parulas can be told from the closely related Northern Parula because they lack white crescents around the eye. Hybrids can blur this difference.

Names and lore in Costa Rica

The Spanish name used in Costa Rica is Parula Tropical. Elsewhere it has other names, such as reinita tropical in Colombia and pitiayumí in the southern cone.

Status and conservation

The AOCR list marks it as a resident (R), and the IUCN rates the species Least Concern.

Photography tips

It moves fast through the mid and upper canopy, so it is easier to hear than to photograph. Find the singing bird first, then be patient and watch the foliage above, since it may take 10 to 15 minutes to show itself.
