Finca Luna Nueva is a working farm of 127 acres, 25 minutes from La Fortuna, with a canopy tower and forest trails on its private reserve. A birder gets the treetops from a tower.
The lodge runs a tropical birding tour and reports more than 250 species on that reserve. A canopy tower puts a birder level with the crowns of the trees.
Arenal Volcano National Park is the next big stop, a short drive away, so a night here splits the Arenal region into two different mornings.

Staying at Finca Luna Nueva Lodge
The farm came first and the lodge grew out of it, which shapes the stay. Casitas, a dome, an earth-bag house and family bungalows are spread across the property among gardens and forest, most with a porch or deck and a hammock. Breakfast is a buffet, and lunch and dinner follow the week's harvest. Between meals there are trails through rainforest, farmland and a garden of more than 300 medicinal plants, a bird-watching platform and a bamboo tower. Afternoons are for the spa, the solar-heated jacuzzi or yoga, and after dark a guided night walk. It is warm here, about 75 to 88°F through the year.
Rooms
- Dome Suite: 1 king, private deck, panoramic jungle and mountain view, hot water.
- Casitas Deluxe: 1 king, three casitas in the rainforest, outdoor sitting area, hot water, coffee and tea.
- Family Bungalow: two bedrooms (1 queen; 4 twins), private porch.
Meals. farm-to-table restaurant cooking from the farm's harvest. Breakfast buffet included (FAQ); lunch and dinner by reservation. Vegan meals on request.
Good to know
- About 2.5 hours from SJO and about 3 hours from Liberia (LIR) by car (lodge's figures).
- The lodge says it is wheelchair accessible.
- Rainy season roughly mid-May to late December; rubber boots available to borrow.
- Tap water is drinkable; no bottled water sold.
Perfect for: a birder travelling with a partner who wants yoga, a spa and food from the farm.
