Piping Long-tailed Woodcreeper

Deconychura typica

In Spanish: Trepador Típico

  • Resident

A slim, pale-spectacled woodcreeper of humid forest, found by its piping song.

The Piping Long-tailed Woodcreeper, Trepador Típico in Spanish, is a slim woodcreeper of humid forest in Costa Rica's lowlands and foothills. It was first described from Pozo Azul de Pirris in the southwest, so a visit here is a visit to the bird's original home.

It is uncommon and local, and birders are only likely to find it with ease if they know its vocalizations, which are heard rather rarely. Listening first and looking second is the way in.

On a trip we build, the Corcovado area on the Osa side is one place where visitors can meet it.

How to find it

Learn the fast piping song before you go, because the bird is far easier to find by ear than by eye. Search the interior of humid primary forest first, then forest edges and mature secondary forest. Early morning and late afternoon are when singing is most often heard, though it can sing at any hour. Since it does not sing nonstop, wait quietly in one spot rather than moving on after a single silence. Scan trunks and vines from the understory up into the canopy, and check mixed-species flocks.

How to recognise it

Look for a straight, thin, delicate bill and a slimmer build than other woodcreepers.

The pale spectacles stand out more than on Cocoa and Streak-headed Woodcreepers. The head also shows less streaking than on those two.

The genus name Deconychura comes from Greek words for ten and claw or tail, and refers to the ten stiff, curved tail feathers. The species name typica marks it as the type species of the genus.

When a woodcreeper turns up, check three things: the bill, the spectacles and the slim shape. Then compare it with the two more heavily streaked species.

Behaviour and diet

It feeds from the understory up to the canopy, roughly 3 to 20 m up. It forages alone, in pairs, or with mixed-species flocks.

It hitches up trunks and vines, mostly picking prey off surfaces, and sometimes makes short sallies to catch prey in the air.

It is mostly a year-round resident. Some movements up and down slope are suspected in Costa Rica.

Where it lives

In Central America this woodcreeper mostly lives in lowlands and foothills. In Costa Rica it reaches about 1,200 m (3,900 ft). Across its range it lives mostly in humid forest.

It favors the interior of humid primary forest, and it also turns up at forest edges and in mature secondary forest.

The Costa Rican form ranges from the north-central and southwest regions east into central Panama.

When to see it

Dated Costa Rican photos exist from January, at Monteverde in 2017 and at La Sirena in Corcovado in 2025, so it can be found in the dry season. They do not show a seasonal pattern.

Similar birds

It was split from the Long-tailed Woodcreeper (Deconychura longicauda) because of differences in looks and in voice. The Whistling Long-tailed Woodcreeper of the Guianas and northern Brazil sings a high, clearly descending, plaintive whistle, while the Costa Rican bird gives a fast series of piping notes. Cocoa and Streak-headed Woodcreepers are the likeliest confusions here.

Names and lore in Costa Rica

The official name is Trepador Típico. Costa Rican birders may still see the older name Trepador Delgado, used for the typica group. Elsewhere in Spanish it is Trepatroncos Colilargo Pequeño.

Status and conservation

The official Costa Rican bird list gives it as a resident species, and BirdLife International lists it as Least Concern.
