Evergreen sits in the northeast corner of Tortuguero, about five minutes by boat from the national park entrance, so the first canal of the day is a short ride.
What it has that our other three Tortuguero lodges do not is trees. The lodge stands on two hectares of tall forest rather than open gardens, which puts the canopy birds above the cabins between boat trips.
Its own bilingual guides take you out, and meals are included, so a birding day here is boat, breakfast, boat.

Birding on the property
Two hectares of tall trees, with a canopy tour on the property and the lodge's own bilingual guides for the boat tours into the park. The lodge's site gives no birding detail of its own beyond the park: more than 405 bird species, the Great Blue Heron and the Northern Jacana. So treat the grounds as a place to look up between trips, and the canals as where the list grows.

The birds to look for
On the canals a few minutes away, the Roseate Spoonbill, the Great Blue Heron, a northern migrant, and the Northern Jacana walking the floating plants. After dark, the Boat-billed Heron, the chocuaco.
In the tall trees along the water, look for the two birds of the Caribbean lowlands, the Great Green Macaw and the Keel-billed Toucan, with the Great Potoo on a dead snag at dusk and the Sunbittern at the water's edge.
