Playa Cativo Eco-Lodge, self-guided trails and mangrove kayaking on the Golfo Dulce

Map of Playa Cativo Eco-Lodge, self-guided trails and mangrove kayaking on the Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica

Playa Cativo says birdwatching is one of the most popular things its guests do, and the lodge is set up for it in a way most are not: self-guided trails, so a birder can walk at their own pace and stop for as long as a bird takes.

The second habitat is the water. The lodge offers mangrove kayaking that it describes as suited to birders, which puts you on the water at the mangrove edge, a habitat a trail does not reach.

The lodge also publishes a blog on the marine birds of the Golfo Dulce, which is the right reading before a morning in a kayak.

Birding on the property

The lodge's activities page lists birdwatching as one of its most popular activities, with self-guided trails and mangrove kayaking suited to birders, and its blog covers the marine birds of the Golfo Dulce. It gives no species count, feeders or tower.

The birds to look for

The birds below come from our Golfito and Piedras Blancas pages, a short way along the gulf. The Scarlet Macaw, the Orange-collared Manakin and the Riverside Wren, then the other birds found only on this stretch of the Pacific: Baird's Trogon and Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager.

Overhead the King Vulture and the Ornate Hawk-Eagle. The lodge's marine bird blog is the place to look for the shore birds; we have not taken names from it.

Staying at Playa Cativo Eco-Lodge

Playa Cativo is reached only by water: you are met at Golfito or Puerto Jiménez airport and taken by boat across the gulf to the lodge's dock. Rooms are built of reclaimed hardwood with local art and tile, most facing the gulf, from ocean-view rooms with a king bed to casitas with their own plunge pool. Some have air conditioning and some rely on the breeze, so choose with care. The full experience plan covers three à la carte meals a day at El Gavilán, the farm-to-table restaurant, kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear in the bay, a morning movement session and an introductory rainforest walk. The rest of the day moves between the beach, the reserve trails, Lotus Spa and sunset at Boruca's Bar.

Rooms

  • Premium Ocean View with A/C: king bed; 180 degree view of gardens and gulf from a private terrace; air conditioned.
  • Luxury Casita Plunge Pool: sleeps 3, king plus sofa bed; private terrace with plunge pool, views to the shore (also available with A/C).
  • Family Ocean View Villa: sleeps 6, king, two queens and two sofa beds; two storeys, plunge pool shared only among family villa guests.

Meals. El Gavilán, farm-to-table, using produce from the lodge farm; three à la carte, multi-course meals a day on the full experience plan (home page). Boruca's Bar for sunset.

Good to know

  • Boat-only access, about 30 minutes; airport meet at Golfito or Puerto Jiménez is part of the full experience plan.
  • All guests must be 5 or older.
  • Air conditioning only in rooms named "with A/C"; other rooms are not stated to have it.
  • Wifi in all rooms and social areas; housekeeping twice a day (full experience plan).

Perfect for: a couple where one birds the reserve trails at dawn and the other wants a plunge pool and a spa.
