Tiskita is a lodge you choose for the size of the forest around it: 800 acres of private reserve, more than 90 percent of it forest, crossed by over 15 kilometres of trails.
The lodge says about 200 bird species have been recorded at or near it. Guided naturalist walks go out from the lodge, and one of them goes out after dark.
A night walk and a dawn walk from the same lodge give a birder two different forests in one day, which is the reason to stay a second night.

The birds to look for
The birds below come from our zone page for the south Pacific lowlands, not from the lodge's pages. The Scarlet Macaw for the noise, then the birds found only on this stretch of the Pacific, each a regional endemic on the official list: Baird's Trogon, Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager, Orange-collared Manakin, Golden-naped Woodpecker and Riverside Wren. Overhead, the Ornate Hawk-Eagle.
Ask the naturalist which are regular on the lodge's own trails. We do not have that list.

Staying at Tiskita Jungle Lodge
Tiskita is properly remote: about 7 to 8 hours by road from San José, the last 6 km unpaved past Pavones. The cabins are scattered among the fruit trees on the slope above the beach. Superior Casitas are rooms in shared cabins of two to four, each with a porch; the bungalows stand alone, some with an ocean view. Meals are served family-style at the main lodge, three times a day, with fruit from the orchard, and drinks run on an honor bar. Two guided outings, such as an early bird walk or a rainforest walk, come with the stay. Days run hot, around 30°C, cooling to about 20°C at night, and storms can cut the power for a while.
Rooms
- Superior Casita, Howler: three rooms in one cabin, each with its own porch, closest to the lodge, ocean through the trees; no in-room Wi-Fi
- Superior Casita, Toucan: four-room cabin with a large shared porch, ocean and rainforest view
- Bungalow, Jaguarundi: one king, standalone, fully enclosed indoor bathroom, suited to couples
Meals. Family-style Costa Rican and familiar dishes at the main lodge; full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) is included in every stay. Alcohol is on an honor bar.
Good to know
- Arrive by 6 p.m., when reception closes; check-out 11 a.m.
- Last 6 km past Pavones are unpaved; the last gas station is at Río Claro.
- No Wi-Fi in Howler 1, 2, 3 and Titi 8; mobile signal is patchy.
- Storm outages happen; battery backup runs essentials for several hours.
Perfect for: a family or couple who want several nights properly off the grid, with meals and guided walks taken care of.
