Lapa Rios is a private reserve of 1,000 acres on the Osa, and the lodge's own pages claim more than 300 bird species on that land. The birding starts at the door.
The birding is part of the stay, not an add-on. The early outing runs about two hours with a bilingual naturalist, and binoculars and a spotting scope are provided, so a first-time birder and a lister can walk out together at first light with the same kit.
We have not built a fixed trip around this lodge yet, so what we can tell you comes from the lodge's own pages and from our Osa and Golfo Dulce pages. Tell us your list and we fit it in.

Birding on the property
The lodge's pages describe a private reserve of 1,000 acres, more than 300 bird species claimed, and an early birding outing of about two hours led by a bilingual naturalist, with binoculars and a spotting scope provided. They name no trails, feeders or tower and no species, so the birds below come from our zone page for the southern lowlands, not from the lodge.

The birds to look for
The loud one first: the Scarlet Macaw, which you hear before you see. Then the birds found only on this stretch of the Pacific, each carrying the official list's regional endemic flag: Baird's Trogon, Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager, Turquoise Cotinga, Orange-collared Manakin and Riverside Wren. Overhead, the Ornate Hawk-Eagle.
Our zone page names these for the southern lowlands as a whole. The naturalist at Lapa Rios will know which of them are regular on this land.

Staying at Lapa Rios Ecolodge
From the Puerto Jiménez airstrip it is a dirt road through pasture and forest, with three shallow stream crossings, to the lodge. The thatched main lodge sits on the ridge; bungalows and villas are linked to it by forest paths and wooden steps, so expect climbing. Rooms range from 80 m2 bungalows open to the forest through screen walls, to suites with air conditioning and glass doors, to villas with an ocean view. Every room has a ceiling fan and mosquito netting, and wifi reaches the rooms. Guapira cooks farm-to-table with a plant-based menu. Days start with the included early bird walk and end with dinner on the ridge.
